Affidea has acquired two outpatient clinics in Portugal.
Affidea, Europe’s largest provider of diagnostic, out-of-hospital care, has expanded its services in Portugal for patients in need of radiology and cardiology care by acquiring two outpatient centers, Clínica Radiologia de Albufeira and Clínica do Coração do Alentejo.

Affidea Portugal has 1,500 staff members at 23 clinics that care for over 1.5 million patients annually. Its acquisition of Clinical Radiologia de Albufeira, a radiology service provider, extends its reach for the first time into Portugal’s southernmost region, Algarve, where the clinic provides MR, CT, ultrasound, mammography, X-ray, and bone densitometry imaging to 19,000 patients annually.

In Evora, where Affidea provides diagnostic imaging and outpatient care, the company has acquired Clínica do Coração do Alentejo, a cardiology reference center in the region that was founded in 2009. It also provides psychiatry, dermatology, internal medicine, pneumology, rheumatology, and urology care.

"The new facilities are benefitting from our scale and from our growth plans, which includes investments in new state-of-the-art equipment, digitalisation processes or new expansions, among others," Affidea Portugal CEO Miguel Santos told HCB News.

Through these deals, Affidea Portugal adds 80 new staff members to its roster, half of which are doctors, while its parent company, Affidea Group, now operates 332 centers that care for more than 12 million patients each year in 15 countries.

The company has completed multiple acquisitions since the beginning of the year. In January, it acquired Plastic Surgery Group (PSG) in Switzerland, followed by seven medical imaging clinics in Romania in February.

In April, it became the owner of Eljuga polyclinic, adding a Centre of Excellence in women’s health in the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

It also completed its acquisition of Schoen Clinic London in late May, creating the U.K.’s leading Centre of Excellence in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine.

Additionally, that month, it acquired Instituo Radiologico Gandini, an Italian medical center in Biella that specializes in diagnostic imaging and women's health, offering MR, mammography, bone densitometry, doppler ultrasound, and comprehensive breast checkups and screenings.

As out-of-hospital care continues to grow, Santos anticipates more collaborations between clinics likes these and hospitals, which in the long-term, he says, will set the ground for more coordinated care delivery planning and the transition of services from hospitals to outpatient care facilities.

"It will also optimize resource utilization and reduce healthcare costs by directing appropriate cases to the most suitable setting," he said.

The Portuguese facilities will eventually adopt the Affidea international brand.

Financial details for the acquisitions in Portugal were not disclosed.
