The Centre de Cancérologie de la Porte de Saint-Cloud (CCPSC) in Boulogne has become the first medical practice in France to treat brain cancer patients with the ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform, a cobalt-free stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) system designed by ZAP Surgical.
CCPSC, part of the American Hospital of Paris, used ZAP-X, a noninvasive and painless treatment for select primary and metastatic brain tumors, to treat three patients, each with a single brain metastasis, on their first day. The system uses gyroscopic mobility to project radiosurgical beams from hundreds of angles, with the beams adjusting their shape to the contours of the targeted tumor with sub-millimetric precision to avoid hitting critical structures and healthy brain tissue.
“As ZAP-X is designed specifically for cranial radiosurgery it allows us to treat the most challenging cases with confidence,” said Dr. Alain Allaw, radiation oncologist at the CCPSC. "And unlike multipurpose radiotherapy devices, ZAP-X provides patients with potentially lower healthy brain exposure to radiation, and thus enables greater flexibility for our clinical team to treat recurring brain metastasis patients."
ZAP-X, as the first and only vault-free and cobalt-free SRS delivery system, can be installed without costly shielded radiation treatment rooms, and saves them more by removing the need to maintain, secure, and regularly replace live radioactive isotopes.
The solution is installed in clinical settings worldwide, including at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona; MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute in Clinton, Maryland; and the European Radiosurgery Center in Munich, Germany. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, the first provider in India and South Asia to install the system, was scheduled to begin using it in early 2023.
