Radiology Business Solutions has acquired Apollo Healthcare, which specializes in gaining prior authorization for proton therapy treatment.
Radiation Business Solutions (RBS), a billing service provider and consultant for oncology practices across the U.S., has acquired Apollo Healthcare.

Facilitating access for cancer patients to novel lifesaving treatments, Apollo specializes in proton therapy administration and gaining approval for practices to treat patients with the advanced radiotherapy technique. It also offers operations and finance consulting for proton therapy centers, as well as patient access and referral management services.

"Bringing the full Apollo line of business into RBS is a natural addition to our service offerings and allows us to provide value to proton therapy providers more directly,” said RBS CEO Dan Moore in a statement.

Apollo uses medical dosimetrists and a streamlined approval management process within its prior authorization service and also uses clinical operations and patient access management and referral development to facilitate access to proton therapy centers. Its service models are value-based and risk-shared.

The company submits over 30 pages on average, arguing why patients should be approved for proton therapy, to insurers. Its success rate is 70% for specialties it represents, which is significantly higher than the usual 10% success rate these companies experience, according to its website.

Once approval is gained, Apollo offers the option of managing the entire treatment planning process for the practice.

In addition to its billing and consulting services, RBS runs five free-standing cancer centers in underserved communities. It optimizes the revenue cycle performance of its clients’ sites of service, representing over $250 million in annual charges. Its headquarters is in Joelton, Tennessee, outside of Nashville.

Under the deal, former Apollo Healthcare CEO Ben Frank will continue as CEO of RBS sister company, Wheelhouse, which provides solutions to employers for cancer-related needs. He also will serve as an advisor to Apollo and RBS.

Apollo co-founder Christopher Gonzalez will take control of Apollo as a division of RBS.

Both Frank and Gonzalez previously partnered with RBS in 2020 to launch Apollo Healthcare, with Frank placed in charge of the company and Gonzalez overseeing operations.

"By becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of RBS, we have access to more expertise and solutions for our proton clients," said Gonzalez. "The acquisition allows the Apollo team to remain focused on our number one task: ensuring that cancer patients have access to the specialized treatments they need."
