Canon's AiCE technology is now available for use in 96% of all procedures that use the Vantage Orian 1.5T MR system
Canon Medical’s Advanced intelligent Clear-IQ Engine Deep Learning Reconstruction technology can now be applied to 96% of all procedures utilizing the Vantage Orian 1.5T MR system.

Previously FDA-cleared for brain and knee indications, the solution can be used to address a number of clinical indications, from prostate to shoulders, including all joints, cardiac, pelvis, abdomen and spine.

“In today’s environment, making images easy to read and acquire is more important than ever, and this is the latest demonstration of our commitment to offering accessible AI that clinicians can use to make the greatest impact on patient care,” said Jonathan Furuyama, managing director of the MR business unit for Canon Medical Systems USA, in a statement.

Approved by the FDA in 2019, AiCE is designed with a deep learning neural network for reducing noise and boosting signal to deliver clear and accurate images faster. The aim behind it is to enhance clinician performance, productivity and throughput. The algorithm is trained on a large amount of high-quality image data and reconstructs images, with improved spatial resolution, at a three to five times faster rate than conventional model-based iterative reconstruction.

In addition to the Vantage Orian 1.5T MR, AiCE is also available on all of the company’s CT systems, including Aquilion Lightning, Aquilion ONE / PRISM Edition, Aquilion Prime SP and Cartesion Prime Digital PET/CT system.

Radiologists and technicians were recently asked to distinguish between images taken on the Vantage Orian 1.5T system using AiCE with standard 3T MR images, as part of the AiCE Challenge. Half of the participants said they had difficulty telling the difference between 3T images without AiCE and Orian 1.5T images with AiCE applied.

“There are many advantages of utilizing 1.5T MR as opposed to 3T systems. 1.5T scanners produce less audible noise, allow for safer imaging of implants and offer lower operational costs — all of which can lead to optimal clinician and patient satisfaction above or at least equal to what a 3T system would provide,” said Furuyama when the AiCE challenge results were released.
