ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Eastman Kodak Company and Viatronix, Inc. announced the first installation of Viatronix's virtual colonoscopy software with Kodak's PACS platform at the Borg Imaging Group, one of the largest chains of diagnostic imaging centers in the Rochester, N.Y. area.

Kodak and Viatronix, Inc. recently announced the successful integration of VIATRONIX V3D-Colon software into Kodak's PACS (picture archiving and communications system) to enable healthcare professionals to automatically process CT images into three-dimensional (3D) models for rapid viewing, diagnosis and report generation.

V3D-Colon software offers a unique virtual colonoscopy workflow: images of the patient's abdomen and pelvis area are taken using a CT scan while the colon is inflated, and then a three dimensional (3D) model is automatically generated. The physician can then sit at a KODAK DIRECTVIEW diagnostic workstation and interactively examine the colon for polyps and lesions by virtually navigating through a dynamic 3D representation that is similar to what is seen in a traditional optical exam.

"When we reviewed the benefits associated with integrating virtual colonoscopy software with our PACS workstation, we felt we could further enhance the level of care we provide at our facility while simultaneously leveraging our existing PACS investment," said Dr. James A. Schuster, Managing Partner, Borg Imaging Group. "After testing the VIATRONIX V3D-Colon system, we are confident this solution provides us with a cost-effective, optimized workflow solution for colon cancer screening at our center."

With early screening, over 90% of colon cancers may be prevented. V3D-Colon offers an alternative for colon cancer screening to the traditional, optical screening and can help expand the number of people who opt for colon screening. "Patients are becoming aware of this less-stressful alternative and are asking for this colon screening procedure," Schuster said.

Kodak's PACS System 5 is a flexible, scalable platform for the storage, interpretation and distribution of digital medical images and information used at medical facilities of all sizes around the world. Kodak's PACS makes it possible to distribute information from one destination to another securely via the Internet, thus facilitating and expediting communications between radiologists and referring physicians.

Kodak's Health Group is offering VIATRONIX V3D-Colon software worldwide as both an optional enhancement to its KODAK DIRECTVIEW PACS System 5 or as a separate dedicated workstation.
