“The biggest challenge is expanding commercial coverage for more cancer indications,” said Haslam at the time. “Our members are striving to meet that challenge by continuing to develop the clinical evidence demonstrating the therapeutic benefits of proton therapy. We’re also exploring innovative methods to bring down the costs to provide the service.”

Frank says the law brings not just another cancer option to patients in Tennessee but has the potential to influence and help shape similar legislation in other states.

"We absolutely believe this will be a catalyst for other states to pass similar proton therapy laws," he said. "We are hopeful that the scope of this law will be a stepping stone to other broader legislation around the country."

The law was one of 18 to take effect on New Year’s Day in the state, with others addressing the opioid crisis and protection of the elderly from abuse, according to NBC affiliate, WBIR 10 News.

Neither Frank nor Provision CARES Proton Therapy Nashville were directly involved in development and passing of the legislation.
