FUJIFILM SonoSite has teamed up with Partners HealthCare in a collaboration that aims to integrate and use AI to enhance point-of-care ultrasound.

The two plan to apply algorithms that will enhance the functionality of portable ultrasounds and enable clinicians of any level of experience to perform scans at point-of-care.

"Our intent is to bring ultrasound to more patients and ultimately improve patient care and drive costs down. We’ll do this by integrating AI into products where both novice and experienced users can benefit," Diku Mandavia, senior vice president and chief medical officer at FUJIFILM SonoSite, told HCB News. "By exposing or assisting more users on our products, we allow more patients to benefit from ultrasound. We plan to include the entire FUJIFILM SonoSite point-of-care ultrasound portfolio into this initiative."

The presence of the algorithms is expected to automate processes such as segmentation of organ boundaries, the measuring of anatomic features and calculations of physiological parameters. Algorithms will be available for a range of different experience levels as well as for different clinical settings, from lower resource areas to sophisticated hospital environments.

The first project will focus on using AI to enhance portable ultrasound for complex emergency medical procedures to reduce time delays between when a patient experiences trauma and when they are formally diagnosed. The anticipated result is more rapid interventions and improved outcomes.

FUJIFILM SonoSite and Partners HealthCare will carry out their work through the MGH & BWH Center for Clinical Data Science, with Partners HealthCare providing extensive data assets, computational infrastructure and clinical expertise that will be used alongside the clinical and technical expertise of FUJIFILM SonoSite. Though emergency medicine is a targeted area for the collaboration, the two plan to distribute access to such technology in a variety of healthcare specialties.

"This is a point-of-care collaboration and is not restricted to emergency medicine," said Mandavia. "This initiative will benefit all specialties that implement point-of-care ultrasound within their practice, including emergency medicine, anesthesiology, critical care, and more."
