New Siemens solutions close care gaps in incidental findings and lung cancer screening

Siemens Healthineers has released two new tools to help radiology departments with follow-up and workflow.

At the SIIM annual meeting in Maryland’s National Harbor, the company showcased its Proactive Follow-up solution, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) with natural language processing to extract incidental findings – abnormalities detected in an imaging exam prescribed for a different reason – and closes the gap in follow-up.

The solution, released in April, prioritizes the cases that require follow-up with on-screen labels and also provides recommendations on how to address them, with clinical decision support that can be tailored to the facility’s guidelines. The tool documents the eventual action that was taken and the worklist can be integrated into the electronic health record.

Patricia Christiansen, global product marketing manager for digital health at Siemens, noted that 35 percent of incidental findings don’t receive appropriate follow-up. The solution was developed in response to customer needs.

“It might happen in the ER and the ER physician can’t follow up,” Christiansen told HCB News. “This is a valuable solution to a true problem in this industry.”

The company also featured its Screening Workflow Navigator for lung cancer screening, released in December of last year. Facilities can use the solution to submit reports to the ACR electronically.

“A lot of facilities are gathering data on spreadsheets and then creating a flat file and submitting it themselves to the ACR,” Leann Eassai, global product marketing manager for digital health services at Siemens, told HCB News. “But when you do that, you don’t know right away that there’s missing data until you get the rejection that says the reimbursement is not going to happen.”

The tool also lets facilities run reports on the data and it has a patient letter generator.

The next release of the Screening Workflow Navigator in the fall will include screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, another screening that is going to be reimbursed through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
