Canon Medical Systems USA announced a partnership on Thursday with Quality Electrodynamics (QED).

The Vantage Galan 3T MR system, which was installed at the newly built QED Research Center in Ohio, will be used to develop new MR technologies including radiofrequency coils.

The grand opening for the QED Research Center took place in early November. It's located in what is known as the region's Health-Tech Corridor — surrounded by Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University.
Researchers affiliated with those local universities and other commercial organizations will have access to this MR system to test the compatibility and performance of their products in the MR environment.

"By centering our operations in Northeast Ohio, QED will continue to work with some of the best minds in the world on health care delivery, looking at ways to better diagnose, manage or treat common diseases across the health continuum,” Dr. Hiroyuki Fujita, founder and CEO of QED, said in a statement.

This deal is the first phase in the QED Research Center's "community collaborative innovation platform exploration." This is also a win for Canon — as it will provide the company with access to research that can inform its development of new clinical applications.

The development of the research center was funded with a grant from JobsOhio, which is a nonprofit company that promotes job creation and economic development in Ohio. The company's Research & Development Center Grant Program allows it to make strategic investments in new R&D centers that support existing and emerging sectors.

"These life-changing medical advances aren't just happening in traditional biohealth hubs like Boston, San Francisco or New York City. They are also happening in Ohio, giving the state a growing and well-earned reputation as a center of lifesaving innovation,” Aaron Pitts, managing director for biohealth at JobsOhio, said in a statement.
