Hospital CEOs Anxious--Doctor and Nurse Numbers Low

by Scott Hutchins, Project Manager | May 16, 2007
A survey conducted on behalf of the Council on Physician and Nurse Supply by AMN Healthcare, the nation's largest healthcare staffing company, indicates that 82% of hospital CEOS believe that a physician shortage is currently a serious problem, while 96% believe that a nurse shortage is now a serious problem. Only three percent believe that there was no shortage of doctors, and less than one percent believes that there is no shortage of nurses.

A majority of respondents (54%) prefer their nursing students to have a baccalaureate degree, and 86% report that finding suitable nurses is daunting. Even more difficult, according to the survey, is finding physicians, which 94% of respondents find a challenge, and 81% of CEOs are seeking them; 74% are seeking specialists. Eighty-nine percent are seeking nurses.

Richard Buz Cooper, MD, co-chair of the Council, believes that it is a "profound mistake" to reduce funding for physician and nurse training, which the federal government has proposed reducing for the 2008 budget. The Council recommends that Congress look for ways to allay the shortage.
