From the May 2017 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

As in years past, we’ve gathered 10 apps to share with HealthCare Business News readers. The qualifications to make the list are simple — we gather suggestions from health care professionals and our own research. We cull the list by only including apps which have been updated in the last five months and we avoid covering apps we’ve covered in the past.

Patient care and tracking
With patient feedback tying into reimbursement rates, smart facilities are keeping patients happy — and informed. Here are some of the apps that help make it possible.

App: MyChart
Produced by: Epic
Price: Free
Current Version: 5.1
Last Update: Feb. 15, 2017
Works on: Android and iOS

MyChart is an app for patients, but with millions of downloads, it makes sense for doctors to get familiar with it. The app provides popup notifications about test results, medication reminders, immunization history and more. It also has calendar options to manage appointments. Users can also upload their health and fitness data (to share with their physicians, or for their own reference), view and pay bills online and keep track of the rest of the family’s health care information as well. According to the company, Version 5.1 is the last update that will support iOS 8.4. Future updates will require 9.0 or above. Patients wishing to use MyChart need to create an account through their health care provider’s MyChart website.

App: FollowMyHealth
Produced by: Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc.
Price: Free
Current Version: 2.10.1
Last Update: March 13, 2017
Works on: Android and iOS

FollowMyHealth, and the previously mentioned MyChart, are basically either/or choices for patients looking at ways to keep track of their health care. FollowMyHealth provides reminders, health summaries, test and lab results, prescription refills, bill paying and more. For iOS users, it does coordinate with Apple health to incorporate the information recorded there. With both apps being relatively similar, it may come down to a question of what a patient’s health care providers recommend or are more familiar with.
