In my opinion, women interventionalists must work harder and better than their male counterparts because they are judged by a different standard. To achieve success in this field, I advise women who are starting their careers to stay focused and take the high road as much as possible. Volunteer for research projects, join committees, and build your practice. Develop a national presence, be hard-driving but friendly, and show respect for your colleagues, especially other women. It is crucial that women support each other.
We live in a time when medicine is no longer considered the lucrative or enviable career choice it once was. Simply put, the end game just isn’t that great anymore. However, if you are passionate about medicine and have already decided to enter the profession, focus on what interests you the most while keeping a close eye on what your day-to-day practice will look like.
I’m lucky to be working in a field that I love. If I had to do it all over again, I’d still opt for cardiology. With a growing population, many more opportunities will become available. And, cardiology patients are nicer than any others!
