My visit to Richardson Electronics

Last week, after the IAMERS meeting, Barbara and I drove to Harmony, North Carolina to have dinner with Jane and Ronnie Taylor with SVSR. Ronnie is a trailer and HVAC guru and I try to visit him once a year.
On the way, we stopped off and had a very nice visit with Trey McIntyre and Tom Spees at the Richardson Healthcare facility in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
I have been in and out of a lot of facilities over the years and some are nicer than others. The Richardson facility is clean and nice and organized and seemed to be very well equipped.
I always appreciate good organizational skills and Trey has really set up a well organized shop. Like many other companies, all of the parts are tested, there is a place for everything and everything is in its place, and like other companies, they have fast and organized turnaround.
Some of you might know that several of the key people who worked for Dunlee left Dunlee to go to work for Richardson Healthcare. What you may or may not know is that Richardson has decided to manufacture CT tubes that were previously only available from the OEM. I am not 100 percent sure but I think this gives Trey a unique advantage. He is stocking parts, he is training people on how to install the parts and service the machines — and now he is able to provide X-ray tubes.
It is my understanding that Richardson is going to offer these tubes to other training and service companies as well as in-house service teams.
I do not want this to sound like an advertisement for Richardson but it is a milestone in the same way that it was when Dunlee started to offer three kinds of CT tubes.
There are no new ideas under the sun and it is my understanding that Varian also intends to offer some replacement tubes that were previously only available from the OEM.
In the end, I think that as hospitals continue to merge and have bigger and bigger footprints, so too will the in-house biomedical teams. Competition like this for tubes and parts will help to drive health care costs down.
The innovation that helped to make America great will do the same for health care, I hope.

I had the pleasure visiting last week the new Europe based facility of Richardson Electronics in The Netherlands located in Amsterdam at Schiphol Airport. I was welcomed by my dear friends Chuck Gauthier and Marcel Verhagen. It was fascinating see a professional set-up with a rather large stock of spare parts for Toshiba AQUILION 16 and 64 CT Scanners. I was surprised to see the CT staging facilities as well the part repair facility which they got up and running in just a few month. I believe that our European market will highly benefit from the products and services offered by Richardson Electronics.
