Hospital Spotlight – Q&A with Tim Bollig, Operations Manager for Mercy Hospital, part of Allina Health

by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | May 11, 2016
From the May 2016 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

We were fortunate enough to be one of the first sites in the U.S. to purchase and install a Siemens Force CT scanner for clinical use. Low dose, fast acquisition and the ability to perform excellent cardiac exams all played an important part in acquiring the technology. Cardiology and radiology work well together here, and we are fortunate in that regard.

With 271 beds, Mercy Hospital is a medium- sized hospital. So to acquire state-of-the- art imaging gear and use it to its potential is something I’ve been happy to be a part of in the last two-and-a-half years. Last year, we combined obstetric services of Mercy Hospital and another nearby Allina Health hospital, Unity Hospital, at a brand new Mother Baby Center on the Mercy campus. The Mother Baby Center at Mercy with Children’s is a collaboration with another health system, Children’s Minnesota.

The collaboration is with a Level II nursery, so we are able to handle births that happen at 32 weeks and above. Prior to that, it was 34 weeks and above. And, because of the partnership, there are highly trained practitioners on staff from Children’s Minnesota who provide exceptional care to our smallest patients.

HCB News: In your opinion, what does Mercy do best, or what would you like it to be best-known for?
TB:
Mercy Hospital is known for meeting local needs as well as being known in the north region for strong specialty services such as outstanding heart care and The Mother Baby Center. But I think it’s special because the community feels connected to Mercy Hospital. There’s something about this place where patients and employees care about each other, and the employees like coming here.
