Dr. Kavita Patel

Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution receives 2016 Cancer Center Innovator Award at Cancer Center Business Summit
February 25, 2016
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Foley & Lardner LLP is pleased to announce Dr. Kavita Patel, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, as the recipient of its annual Cancer Center Innovator Award. The 2016 award was accepted by Dr. Patel at the recent Cancer Center Business Summit (CCBS) in Phoenix, Arizona.

“We are honored to recognize Dr. Kavita Patel,” said Michael Blau, chair of Foley’s Industry Teams and co-founder of CCBS. “We believe that her leadership in designing the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s (CMMI) Oncology Care Model (OCM) will serve as a major transformative force in cancer care payment and delivery for years to come.”

In an effort to lower the beneficiary costs of chemotherapy treatment for cancer, Dr. Patel helped to develop this five-year pilot program to incentivize providers to deliver efficient, high-quality care for Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) beneficiaries. Under the OCM program, Medicare FFS participants receive a fixed per-beneficiary, per-month (PBPM) care management fee during a six-month “episode” of care. Participating practices may also receive a performance-based payment with documentation of quality improvement and reduction in overall cost of care.

Dr. Patel’s research and reports focus on patient-centered care, payment and delivery system reform, workforce issues, and health reform implementation. Dr. Patel is currently a practicing primary care internist at Johns Hopkins Medicine. She previously served in the Obama Administration as director of policy for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement in the White House, where she played a key role in the design of health care reform legislation.

“I am truly honored to receive Foley’s Cancer Center Innovator Award,” said Dr. Patel. “I am elated that Foley also envisions a future where OCM is an accepted model of payment for physician practices administering chemotherapy.”

Foley’s Cancer Center Innovator Award was created in 2007 to recognize innovation in the business of community cancer care. This year’s selection was made by the Cancer Center Business Summit Advisory Board and Co-Hosts. The Co-Hosts include Ron Barkley, Managing Principal of Cancer Center Business Development Group, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Flatiron Healthcare, and Foley’s Michael Blau.

At the 2016 Cancer Center Business Summit, industry leaders explored transformations occurring in the business of oncology care. For more information about this year’s event, please visit www.CancerBusinessSummit.com.
