Combining Elekta's linear accelerator with Brainlab's ExacTrac positioning system could mean better outcomes for patients receiving stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy treatment in Germany.

As of now, 12 patients with a variety of indications have been successfully treated at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Hospital using the ExacTrac/Versa HD program, and plans are underway to expand and treat more patients.

"With the successful clinical use of the integrated system combined with more than one million treatments performed with ExacTrac worldwide, we are well-positioned and strongly motivated to continue to expand its reach and our leadership role in the field of stereotactic radiation oncology," said Stefan Vilsmeier, president and CEO of Brainlab, in a statement.

Owing, in large part, to a partnership with Varian Medical Systems, Brainlab's ExacTrac system is currently installed on over 700 linear accelerators worldwide. The compatibility with Elekta's Versa HD means better precision available across a larger array of modalities.

The Ludwig-Maximilian University Hospital in Munich is regarded as one of the top five hospitals in Europe, and has roughly 1,800 doctors and 2,000 beds at their disposal. Brainlab is also headquartered in Munich.
