HRMM will celebrate 50 years of conferences and exhibitions for the health care supply chain at this year’s annual show in San Antonio, Texas. It’s sure to be a proud moment in the Association’s history—and an opportunity to see what lies ahead.

The conference, which takes place Aug. 5 - 8 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, kicks off with an opening keynote address by Dale Smith Thomas, founder of Winners By Choice Inc.

“I’m going giving them immediate ideas they can use for the rest of convention to make it the best convention possible,” says Thomas.

AHRMM traces its humble beginnings back to the 1950s when it was still part of the American Hospital Association. In 1962, the group held its first annual conference in conjunction with the AHA convention before establishing its own membership status shortly after.

Through the years, AHRMM has grown to include thousands of purchasing agents and materials managers from around the globe. At this year’s show a number of events and activities promise to keep attendees engaged. For starters, a new scavenger hunt and trivia game will give attendees the opportunity to compete for prizes while showing off their knowledge about AHRMM.

A panel consisting of chief medical officers and other experts will begin Tuesday’s general session on achieving supply chain success. The discussion will center on proven tactics for identifying shared goals between CMOs and the chief supply chain practitioners. The show will close on Wednesday, Aug. 8, with a discussion of health care reform—which was recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court—and its impact on supply chain management, particularly as it relates to cost pressures.

Over the three day conference, attendees will be able to choose from a selection of learning labs in eight educational tracks: Clinical resource management, logistics, finance, professional development, procurement, strategic planning and technology solutions. All of this year’s learning lab educational sessions will be professionally recorded and synched with the appropriate PowerPoint presentations online, and available for purchase before and after the conference.

The latest marketplace solutions from approximately 200 exhibitors will be on display in the exhibit hall. New this year are two pavilions dedicated to technology and new exhibitors, as well as six half hour learning presentations where select exhibitors can provide educational information.

The conference is also an opportunity for participants to take advantage of networking events with health care supply chain experts. For those who want to get a head start, the pre-conference gets underway Sunday, Aug. 5, with a day full of education sessions on materials management and CMRP, along with two roundtable discussions: “Transitioning from Medical Logistics to Supply Chain Management and Beyond,” and “Strengthening Chapters 2012.”

For some pre-conference fun, AHRMM’s annual golf tournament takes place on the 200-acre Hill Country Golf Club in San Antonio. Proceeds will benefit the Project World Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves the medical needs of children in third world countries.
