Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. said Monday a new Aquilion 80-slice CT system that features the company's recently released AIDR 3D iterative reconstruction technology received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance.

The Aquilion Prime 80s series features a 0.5 millimeter detector and a 7.5 MHU tube. It can do scans in about one-third of a second. It can also accommodate bigger patients, with a 78-centimeter aperture gantry, and a couch that can withstand 660 pounds.

The original Aquilion Prime, with an 80-row detector that's capable of 160 slices, was cleared in February. The new 80 series device has 40 detectors that can reconstruct 80 slices per rotation, the company told DOTmed News. But it can be field-upgraded to 80 detectors, so it can run 160 slices.

The system comes standard with Toshiba's AIDR 3D, the company's third-generation noise-reducing technology that lets doctors take images at lower doses. Toshiba announced ADIR 3D's FDA clearance only last week, and said the software upgrade and related training would be free to all existing Aquilion One, Premium and Prime customers.

In addition to the AIDR 3D, a standard feature for the Prime 80 series is Nema XR 25 Dose Check Software, which comes with dose alerts and notifications.
