H1N1 Flu Declared a National Emergency

by Barbara Kram, Editor | October 24, 2009
Swne flu: a public
health emergency
President Obama declared a national emergency Friday as U.S. H1N1 flu deaths reached the 1,000 mark. Outbreaks have been reported in 46 states; nearly 100 children have died.

The emergency proclamation, an intensification of the nation's public health alert first declared in April, cuts red tape and allows health administrators and officials greater latitude in responding to local needs. For example, the emergency declaration paves the way for hospitals to open off-site treatment facilities and drive-through clinics to reduce patient exposure.

Meanwhile, demand exceeds supply for vaccines to combat the H1N1 strain of flu. Peak flu season usually arrives in January.
