Siemens Healthcare announced this week that they have received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for a new 3 Tesla MRI scanner called the MAGNETOM Prisma.

The company is marketing the scanner for highly demanding applications in research and the clinical setting because of the scanner's high spatial and temporal resolution.

"With applications that display functional information and enable the visualization of details in the smallest anatomical structures, the MAGNETOM Prisma enables researchers to explore bold new territories and address their specific research needs," said Dr. Gregory Sorensen, CEO of Siemens Healthcare North America.

The configuration of the XR gradients on the scanner is unique in that it combines 80 milliTeslas per meter with a 200T-per-meter-per-second slew rate. Other solutions compensate for patient-induced disturbances, such as breathing, which makes the scanner ideal for cardiac and body imaging, as well as applications such as spectroscopy.
