Toshiba said the Food and Drug Administration cleared a new line of the company's wide-bore Vantage Titan 1.5-Tesla MRI systems.

The new 1.5T Titan series features a sleeker exterior and soothing patient lighting around the 71-centimeter bore, and comes in 8-, 16- or 32-channel systems, according to a Toshiba press release.

Toshiba said the 8-channel Titan was an "ideal workhorse" and the 16- or 32-channel varieties provide enhanced resolution for cardiac imaging.

The Titan first debuted at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting in 2007, and was cleared in 2008. A 3T version came out last year.

Toshiba is based in Tustin, Calif.
